Why Home Visiting Day?

Because free home visiting services are awesome for caregivers and kids. And home visitors are awesome. Let’s celebrate all that — and get the word out so more families can benefit.

More specifically …

Home Visiting Day is an annual event highlighting the importance of free in-home, voluntary early childhood education and support services. The designation publicly celebrates the positive impact and life-long benefits that children and families receive from home visiting programs, and recognizes the dedication of trained home visitors for the critical support they provide every day. Our newly upgraded online directory helps families find and access home visiting services in their communities.

The L.A. County Proclamation

On April 9, 2024, Supervisors Hilda L. Solis and Janice Hahn sponsored a motion to proclaim April 19, 2024, Home Visiting Day in L.A. County, and it passed unanimously. This marked the third year in a row that the L.A. County Board of Supervisors showed support.

“Home visiting programs play a pivotal role in fostering happy and healthy families for residents in need across L.A. County. These programs provide parents with tools, resource navigation and nurturing professional support to partner with them for their pregnancy and parenting journey. Their work has led to optimal birth outcomes, strengthened relationships between the parent and child, and helped close disparities in birthing outcomes and fostered healthy infant development, especially for communities of color,” Supervisor Solis said.

With this proclamation, we are uplifting home visiting programs, which are free and have been proven to improve the health of mothers and their children across L.A. County. These programs provide a lifeline to families by connecting people to services,” Supervisor Hahn said.

The Consortium | Home Visiting Day

Home Visiting Day in L.A. County is a project of the Los Angeles County Perinatal and Early Childhood Home Visitation Consortium, an alliance of over 60 home visiting agencies and family and child health organizations. The Consortium supports home visiting programs across the county by sharing training and educational resources, researching best practice standards, supporting enhanced referral systems between programs, conducting research and collecting data on home visiting outcomes, and advocating for systems and policies that recognize the tremendous value of home visiting services. As a former home visiting client, I am so very excited that this day is again being recognized and celebrated by our County. The support and encouragement that home visiting parent coaches provide can be such a positive experience for both parents and babies. Parenting is a tough journey, and having a home visitor by your side guiding you and advocating for you during those early years can be a game changer for parent and baby—from pregnancy and birth to bonding and healthy development. It definitely was for me.

As a partner in creating coordinated and responsive systems of care for L.A. County families, we join in celebrating Home Visiting Day to uplift and promote home visiting services that improve maternal and infant health and generate more equitable outcomes by providing families with the support they need during the most critical moments of a child’s development.

We’re proud that California Hospital was the first in the county to offer the free Welcome Baby in-home support program to families who deliver here. I’m delighted that the program has since expanded to over a dozen hospitals across the county, and now each year some 20,000 L.A. County families receive the free support and resources that Welcome Baby and its partner home visiting programs provide. That means healthier pregnancies, more infant development screenings, more help for parents to reduce stress, more breastfeeding support, and lots of connections to community resources that help families thrive.
